Mary’s Spring

Mary’s Spring is an unusual spring because it is a unique natural gas, carbon dioxide, which springs up near the Central Spa. It is in fact a powerful effusion of gas (99.7% CO2) that dissolves secondarily in the surface water.

Because of its characteristic smell of traces of hydrogen sulphide, it was called Stinky.

The name Mary’s Spring comes from the Marian image that once hung here.

It has an important place in the history of the town as it gave the town its name.

Mary’s Spring is significant for Mariánské Lázně because it was used as the first spring for external balneotherapy before the spa was founded. Today it is used to prepare dry gas baths and subcutaneous application for so-called gas injections.
