The Cross Spring itself has been known since time immemorial by the surrounding villagers and was called “Salty” after its salty taste. It came from a hollow stump. Patients with digestive problems, especially constipation, used to come to it.

In 1749, when Damián Schulz, a pharmacist from Teplá, built a high cross of hewn beams near the Salty Spring and surrounded the spring with stone blocks, the spring was called the Cross Spring. Today it springs in the pavilion of the Cross Spring.

In 1808, the first spa season of Mariánské Lázně started in its surroundings. To this day, the colonnaded hall of the Cross Spring remains in this form as a dominant feature of Mariánské Lázně and a popular emblem of the town.

The history of the spring began here. In 1840, the name was the trademark of the world-famous sought-after healing water, which was then delivered to the hospitals of many European cities from St. Petersburg to London.

The spring was then used for drinking and bathing. The Cross Spring is a strongly mineralised chemically bicarbonate-sodium-sulphate-iron acid. In the past, such acids were simply called “glauberic” or “saline”. The presence of sulphates in the water produces a laxative effect (when ingesting 3/4 litre per day). In the form of sulfates, harmful substances are excreted from the body, sulfates affect the bacterial flora in the intestine and urine, affect the pH of urine and its composition.

Interesting is the difference in effect depending on the temperature of the Cross Spring, warm is recommended for diarrhea, cold against constipation. Also external application – washing the face is useful for acne.

The water of the spring affects gastric and biliary secretion. Because of its therapeutic effect, it is used today mainly for diseases of the digestive system (diseases of the stomach, intestines, gallbladder, liver and pancreas), prescribed for chronic diseases of the gallbladder, inflammation of the gallbladder or liver. It is also used for metabolic diseases such as obesity, gout, diabetes mellitus and allergic diseases

The most famous spring was originally called Slaný, the same as Ferdinand’s Spring.
